How can I help?
"I can't do this!"
" I AM trying!!"
" We just went over this."
"I thought you studied?"
"Your child is reading below grade level."
If you have heard those words or said them, you are not alone...let's figure this out together!

Does your child read for fun? Is reading their go-to relaxation time activity? Or do they loathe books and are frustrated every time they are asked to read? Wouldn't it be nice if they could get some help that relieved that anxiety, gave back their confidence, and made their future brighter?
There is no cure for dyslexia, but you can still accomplish anything!
You are fearfully and wonderfully made! Psalm 139:14 Yes, Albert Einstein is said to have been dyslexic, along with George Washington, Steven Spielberg, Henry Winkler and others. Click on this link to find out more individuals who have shaped our world and who also struggled with learning how to read.
Information from MRI's has revealed why some readers struggle and others do not. It's certainly not a vision issue, as once suspected.

MY SERVICES:
1:1 Academic Therapy During my tutoring sessions, I provide individualized instruction for every student. This occurs in a one-on-one setting, allowing each student to move at his or her own pace, while still retaining the skills. Before services begin, each student will have an assessment so that we can determine the best plan and where to begin. My instruction is primarily an Orton-Gillingham based approach. It is an approved method through the IDA (International Dyslexia Association) and meets the Knowledge and Practice Standards of Teaching Reading. I used it with my own daughter and I firmly believe it is the way to train the brain to unlock the code of the English language for children who are dyslexic and/or have other language-based learning differences. (Please visit my TUTOR SESSION page for a very detailed explanation.) PROVIDE HOME ACTIVITIES
Ideally, a student would have this kind of one-on-one teaching every day in school, so at home activities wouldn't be needed to reinforce skills. But on the days that your child does not attend tutoring, I provide at-home activities that review skills, so learning is not lost. This also gives parents an opportunity to monitor progress. I highly recommend that you spend several evenings a week doing the following : *read with your child, no matter how old they are! *listen to your child read *look at the words while your child reads Every parent should do this regularly (even five minutes a day helps) to avoid a problem developing without knowing it. Some children with poor decoding skills are experts at substituting words by guessing through context or pictures and are not really sounding out the words. Top ten reasons to read to a young person (Don't miss #10!) PROVIDE ENCOURAGEMENT
Parents can be unaware that their child's self-esteem is floundering due to the constant pressure and failure to excel, or just keep up, with the other kids. Anxiety can come from other students, the grades they are receiving or lack of encouragement and positive reinforcement. I am here to give your child the answers as to WHY they are not learning in the classroom and to show them how successful they can be! I can explain the learning differences they have and show them that they, too, can learn what others seem to catch on to so easily. Once they understand the cause, they can start to feel confident, rebuild their self image and advocate for themselves. Being proud of who you are is the driving force behind being successful! HELP WITH SCHOOL ISSUES
Being a former teacher, I have experience dealing with student IEP's and teacher conferences. I have sat on both sides of the table discussing children and their needs. I'd be happy to communicate with teachers if needed and integrate parts of their curriculum into my lessons. Most teachers invite help from a qualified instructor so that their student has the best chance at success. Sometimes it takes a village. I can also help interpret any school testing your child has been given. It can be tricky to understand.
OTHER SERVICESAcademic assessments, reading comprehension, fluency, handwriting instruction, organizational skills, test-taking skills, vocabulary, morphology and more! I also provide consultations for home-schooling parents.

Speaking is a natural skill, no teaching needed. Reading is a man-made activity, a very difficult skill that needs years of teaching to master. Our English language is not a crazy mystery with lots of "weird spellings". It is a language taken from many other languages over centuries of time, and there are patterns and rules to help us learn. Unless a reader is taught to translate the squiggly lines into words that have meaning, they will forever have a learning delay which increases as they age. The keys to success lie in a structured, meaningful and specific intervention. Dyslexia, and other reading disabilities, will not just get better with time. It is not a "developmental" delay. Please do not let anyone convince you of that. People of all ages can become fluent and accurate readers, but only with early and effective intervention. The longer one waits, the more difficult it is to re-train the brain. And YES, it is possible to re-train the brain to follow a more logical and effective pathway at any age.
